A useful CNC price is based on the complete reviewed scope: geometry, material, quantities, operations, setup, critical checks, production hand-off, packaging and postage. Overall length and width alone cannot show that work.

Example quote comparison
Consider two square panels of the same overall size. Panel A has one outside profile and four ordinary through openings. Panel B adds several pocket depths, small engraved text, a fitted insert and a finished-face requirement. The area is similar, but Panel B contains more operation groups, review questions, potential tool changes and checks. A square-metre or perimeter-only comparison would hide the work that matters.
This comparison shows why a controlled file and operation schedule support a more meaningful quote than an image and outside size. The actual quotation is based on the confirmed job scope.
Ways to improve quote confidence
- Send one active revision and identify superseded files.
- State units and include a check dimension.
- Distinguish through features from pockets and engraving.
- Name quantities per part rather than “one sheet of these”.
- Mark functional fits and visible faces.
- Explain what you will finish, assemble and pack.
- Share acceptable simplifications before the quote is fixed.
- Use a coupon or prototype where one physical answer could protect a larger batch.
Price, cost and value are different
The CNC quote is the price for an agreed production scope. Your complete cost may also include design time, your own finishing and assembly, packaging, postage, selling fees, failures, returns and customer support. Value is the benefit the finished product provides to its buyer. A design can be cheaper to machine but worse value if it loses a useful feature or creates more seller labour.
Questions this page cannot answer
It cannot provide an accurate price without the project details. It cannot guarantee that batching always lowers unit cost, because material yield, toolpaths, handling and variation differ. It cannot promise a minimum order, lead time or fixed postage rate. Those belong to the current quote and official carrier information.
Comparing quote options fairly
When two options are offered, compare their assumptions as well as their totals. Confirm that material, quantity, revision, operations, test or prototype work, finishing hand-off, inspection, packaging and postage are equivalent. A lower figure may represent a simpler scope rather than better value. If an option removes a feature, record whether the change affects function, appearance, seller labour or customer assembly. Keep the accepted option with the active files so a later reorder does not silently return to an earlier design.
