1. Define what the first part must prove
Choose the risk: fit, appearance, strength, hardware position, assembly order or the downstream finishing process. A prototype without a decision question can be approved too casually.
2. Use the actual material
Where fit depends on thickness, use the intended grade and source. A successful test in one sheet does not guarantee identical thickness in every future sheet, so the design should allow sensible variation where possible.
3. Record the revision
Give the approved geometry a clear revision identifier. Record the file name, material, thickness, key check, date and any approved deviation. A later email attachment should not silently replace it.
4. Run an approval batch
A small pilot quantity tests more than the CNC operation. It reveals handling time, sanding, finishing, assembly, packaging, postage, customer reaction and your true margin.
5. Review the complete product process
Before increasing quantity, record what was difficult, what failed, what took longer than expected and which part dimensions actually mattered. Update the revision before reordering.
6. Requote the repeat batch
With an approved revision, quoting becomes faster. Material cost, quantity, preparation and delivery still need confirming, but the geometry and hand-off are no longer ambiguous.
