A router can produce geometry that would be unsuitable in the finished product. Machinability does not establish durability, safe use, legal compliance or truthful labelling. The seller places the completed item on the market and must identify the applicable duties, obtain competent advice and keep proportionate evidence.
Define the intended use precisely
“Wooden decor” is too broad for risk review. State who uses the item, in what environment, how it is installed and what loads or contact it experiences. A shelf ornament, children’s puzzle, food-contact board and wall-mounted coat rack have different hazards and regulatory questions even if their outlines are all easy to machine.
Consider foreseeable misuse, not only ideal operation. Could a child access detachable parts? Might a wall item be installed with unsuitable fixings? Can fingers be trapped during folding or assembly? Could an unfinished edge splinter after moisture exposure? Write questions without claiming expertise you do not have, then route them to an appropriate professional or test.
Build a product-safety record
Keep the active design and parts list, intended-use statement, material and finish information, supplier documentation, risk review, test method and results, instructions, warnings, batch traceability and change history. Requirements vary by product and market; a generic folder is not a substitute for identifying what applies.
Supplier data has boundaries. A coating datasheet may describe the product under specified application and cure conditions. It does not certify your complete wooden assembly or prove how a customer will use it. Preserve the exact product name, batch where relevant, instructions and checked date.
Keep claims inside evidence
Words such as “child safe,” “food safe,” “non-toxic,” “load-bearing,” “certified” and “compliant” carry meaning beyond a visual inspection. Use them only where evidence and applicable rules support the exact product, use, market and conditions. Avoid turning a material-level statement into a finished-product guarantee.
Likewise, a successful informal test answers only its defined question. One wall sample holding a load for a short period is not automatically a rated product or installation system. Obtain specialist test design where the consequence of failure demands it.
Example safety decision
For a wooden learning clock with removable number pieces, a machinable file does not resolve the intended-age questions around detachable pieces, accessible edges, coatings, wear, labelling and applicable toy requirements.
Instead of asking the CNC supplier to call it safe, the seller pauses the design and gets competent regulatory guidance. The removable-piece concept may need testing and a documented material/finish route. The seller revises the product only after understanding the applicable obligations and preserves the advice and evidence.
Wood to Spec can then review the controlled geometry for cutter access, feature size, material/process compatibility and production hand-off. A sample can help inspect machining characteristics, but product safety remains outside that machinability review. If the design changes, the seller determines which safety evidence must also change.
CNC and assembly hand-off
Give the workshop functional context without asking it to assume regulatory responsibility. Mark holes for hardware, mating parts, critical edge relationships and features where a tool radius could alter use. Supply manufacturer drawings for bought-in components and state whether you or Wood to Spec supplies them.
Final assembly must have an owner. Define fastening method, adhesive or torque requirements where applicable, inspection and instructions. A perfectly located hole does not prove that the chosen fixing is suitable for the final load or substrate. Those decisions need qualified evidence.
Safety assumptions that evidence cannot support
The product is called decorative to avoid examining foreseeable use. Marketing language does not override how buyers are likely to interact with it.
A supplier certificate is applied to the whole item. Check scope, conditions and whether assembly or finishing changes the conclusion.
Safety review begins after a batch is made. Applicable requirements can affect geometry, materials, records and labelling. Investigate before design freeze.
Warnings are used instead of safer design. Instructions and warnings may be necessary but are not automatically sufficient. Follow competent risk-control advice.
A marketplace listing is treated as regulatory approval. Platform acceptance and seller compliance are different matters.
Repeat orders silently change material or hardware. Substitution can invalidate previous evidence. Control components and review changes.

Can Wood to Spec certify my product?
No certification or product-safety service should be assumed. The enquiry can be reviewed for confirmed machining matters only. Engage suitably qualified testing, regulatory or legal professionals where the product requires them.
Is solid wood safer than sheet material?
Material choice alone cannot answer product safety. Species or grade, defects, moisture, geometry, finish, assembly, user and environment all matter.
Does a rounded edge make a product child-safe?
No. Edge shape may be one consideration, while small parts, coatings, durability, entrapment, instructions and legal requirements may also apply.
What happens if customer feedback reveals a hazard?
Stop and assess the issue proportionately, preserve evidence, identify affected products and seek competent advice about corrective action and reporting duties. Do not quietly edit the next batch while leaving existing customers unaddressed.
