Wood to Spec is operated by JLTG Designs Ltd. It is a dedicated CNC cutting and routing service based in Hertfordshire, created to make custom sheet-material work easier to commission whether you arrive with a rough idea or a controlled production file.

The service is built around a straightforward principle: understand the job before promising the result. Dimensions, material, quantity, fit, visible faces and the intended hand-off are reviewed before quotation. Where a small physical test can answer an important question, that is discussed before committing to a complete part or batch.

A CNC service for different levels of experience

You do not need to know CNC terminology to make an enquiry. A photograph, sketch, overall dimensions and a description of what the part must do can be enough to begin. The first review identifies what is already clear, what can remain flexible and what must be decided before an accurate quotation is possible.

CAD- and CNC-proficient customers can send part IDs, revisions, DXF or SVG geometry, drawings, quantities and critical acceptance points. Technical information is useful, but it is still checked against material behaviour, cutter access, workholding and the practical limits of the current workshop setup.

Product sellers can use the same review to develop a prototype, CNC-cut blank or repeatable small batch. The quotation makes clear which stages are included. CNC cutting does not automatically include sanding, finishing, assembly, retail packaging, fulfilment or stockholding.

The Hertfordshire workshop

Projects are reviewed and machined in a Hertfordshire workshop. The standard materials are MDF, moisture-resistant MDF and structural plywood. A 1220 × 1220 mm sheet is the maximum stock size; the usable area for finished parts is smaller because material must be held safely and space is needed for cutter access, part spacing and edge allowance.

The service focuses on one-offs, prototypes and small batches. Quantities above 50 can be reviewed, but Wood to Spec is not presented as a high-volume manufacturing service. Suitability depends on the part, material, quantity and operations rather than a quantity number alone.

What a practical review covers

A useful review looks beyond the outside shape. It may consider:

  • whether a router cutter can reach every feature;
  • the internal radii left by a round cutter;
  • whether nominal sheet thickness is enough to define a critical fit;
  • how parts will be held during machining and released afterwards;
  • whether a second cutter or tool change is justified;
  • how visible faces, grain direction and part markings should be controlled;
  • what needs checking on a prototype or first part;
  • whether the finished parts can be protected for dispatch.

If information is missing, the response identifies the decision needed instead of hiding it inside an assumption. If a different process would be more suitable, the enquiry may be declined with a clear explanation.

Honest workshop examples

The CNC workshop examples show settings tests, prototype stages, repeated sheet layouts and CNC-completed parts. Wood to Spec is a new dedicated service, so these photographs are described honestly as internal demonstrations or work from the earlier CNC offering. They are not presented as Wood to Spec customer testimonials, reviews or evidence of commercial success.

Each example is limited to what the photograph actually shows. A settings test can demonstrate an approach to checking a detail, but it does not promise a universal tolerance. A repeated sheet layout can show how parts were arranged, but it does not prove capacity for every batch. A part at the completed CNC stage is not described as a finished retail product when coating, assembly or packaging is not visible.

Clear approval and revision control

No production work begins merely because an enquiry form has been submitted. The initial response normally arrives within 1–2 working days and is a response target, not a promised production lead time. Production timing, price, material supply, included stages and approval requirements are confirmed in the quotation.

When geometry, material or quantity changes after approval, the affected decisions are reviewed again. This protects both one-off work and repeat orders from an old sketch or superseded file being treated as the current instruction. See the complete project process.

Files, privacy and commercially sensitive designs

Routine drawings and reference files can be attached to the enquiry or shared through a link. If a design is commercially sensitive, send an initial description without the sensitive file. A suitable transfer method can then be agreed during the review. Submitting a design does not grant permission for it to be displayed as a workshop example.

Dispatch and work outside the service

Finished work is sent by UK-mainland courier or postal dispatch. Fitting, installation and local delivery are not offered. Packed dimensions, weight, protection and postcode are considered before dispatch is accepted. Read the service-area guidance.

The clearest next step is to describe the part’s purpose, approximate size, expected quantity, preferred material and anything it must fit. Unknown details can be labelled as unknown; the review is designed to expose them.
