For product sellers

Turn your product idea into a testable CNC-made part or blank.

A seller-focused route from product idea through prototype, production hand-off, packaging and repeat-order control.

seller

Wood to Spec can be considered as a CNC production partner for a cut part or blank when the geometry, material, approval sample and production hand-off are clear. The quotation confirms material supply and the included machining or preparation stages. Seller fulfilment, retail packaging, final assembly and stockholding are not offered. Start with a prototype that tests the expensive uncertainty, then decide what you will finish, personalise, assemble and pack yourself.

Choose the hand-off point

Route CNC partner supplies Seller remains responsible for
Raw blank Approved cut geometry Surface preparation, finish, personalisation, checks and packing
Machined component Defined profiles/features Final assembly, product claims, instructions and customer fulfilment
Repeated part set Revision-controlled quantities Final product consistency, listing accuracy and after-sales support

This is a planning framework, not a statement that every listed stage is currently offered. Compare blanks and finished products.

A safer product path

  1. Define the buyer, function and reason the product should exist.
  2. Set the likely finish and packed-size constraint.
  3. Review machinability and cost drivers.
  4. Test fit, usability and presentation with a prototype.
  5. Freeze the part ID and revision for a test batch.
  6. Collect evidence from packing, shipping and real use before repeating.

Turn the idea into a product brief and test before a batch.

Packaging belongs in the design

A few millimetres added to a product can force a larger protective pack or carrier band. Finish, sharp details, loose components and assembly instructions also change the pack. Design the product and package together.

Marketplace responsibilities

Production assistance does not transfer the seller’s responsibility for design rights, truthful listing photographs, safety, legal compliance or accurate disclosure of how the item was made. Etsy rules change and must be checked on Etsy’s official pages. Read the production-partner guide.

Details for a product-seller enquiry

  • target customer and intended use;
  • sketch/file and target dimensions;
  • expected first and repeat quantities;
  • material/finish intent;
  • which stages you will complete;
  • critical fit, appearance and safety questions;
  • target packed dimensions and postage route;
  • target unit economics as your own planning input.

Illustrative design example: one blank, several products

One possible seller range could use the same shaped blank for three listings, with variation created through colour, name engraving and a removable stand. This is an illustrative planning example, not a customer result or a claim that the design has been produced by Wood to Spec. Actual scope, cost and feasibility depend on the submitted project and quotation.

Define the seller and workshop hand-off

Decision Evidence to use Consequence
Common blank Keep the functional outline and mounting geometry stable. Seller finish can create choice without multiplying base parts.
Variable zone Define tested engraving bounds and approved fonts. Personalisation cannot collide with holes, edges or fragile detail.
Production hand-off Name who sands, paints, assembles, checks and packs. The quote and seller margin include the correct labour.
Listing and pack Photograph the real completed variation and measure its protected parcel. Marketplace story and postage use the final product, not the raw blank.

Seller decisions that create avoidable rework

The seller orders stock before testing finish labour.

Complete one representative product and time every seller-owned stage before choosing batch size.

Personalisation creates one-off geometry without control.

Use a defined variable field, proof method and SKU or order reference for each produced version.

The CNC partner is absent from the listing story.

Check current marketplace policy and disclose the real production relationship where required.

Packaging is chosen after dimensions are frozen.

Set a packed-size target while the stand, loose pieces and protective clearances can still change.

Product-seller enquiry checklist

  • Name target buyer and use.
  • Show base geometry and variable areas.
  • State prototype and first-batch quantities.
  • Define every production responsibility.
  • List finish materials and cure needs.
  • Identify product safety and rights questions.
  • Calculate complete unit cost.
  • Measure the closed retail parcel.
  • Control SKU, part ID and revision.

Seller production questions

Are blanks automatically allowed on Etsy?

No. Classification depends on the actual item and current Etsy rules; the seller must confirm eligibility and disclosure.

Should every colour become a CNC variant?

Not when the cut geometry is identical. Keep seller-applied finish choices outside CNC revision control where practical.

What should be proven before a repeat batch?

Fit, seller labour, finish consistency, listing accuracy, packaging performance and the active design revision.

Check the product and marketplace assumptions

Seller guidance should use current official marketplace policy, clearly allocated production responsibilities and evidence from the seller’s own product. Listing eligibility, demand and margin cannot be inferred from machinability.

Discuss your product or blank

Send a product or batch brief. No sales-volume, marketplace-eligibility or margin outcome is guaranteed.
