A CNC supplier can be part of an Etsy seller’s production workflow, but the seller must decide whether the item is permitted and how the relationship is disclosed under Etsy’s current rules. The answer depends on the actual design and making process, not on calling a component a blank or adding a small finishing step.
Describe what really happens
Write the product journey in plain language before creating the listing:
- Who originated the design and controls changes?
- What file or specification does Wood to Spec receive?
- Which cutting, pocketing, drilling or engraving operations are supplied?
- What does the seller add through finishing, personalisation or assembly?
- Is the listing for a completed consumer product or a qualifying craft supply?
- Which photographs show the actual finished item buyers receive?
Use that factual account when checking Etsy’s category and disclosure requirements. Do not choose a label first and rearrange the story to fit it.
Seller-designed items and production partners
Etsy publishes Creativity Standards and guidance about working with production partners. Where a seller designs an item and another business helps physically produce it, current policy may require production-partner disclosure and accurate description of the seller’s role. Wood to Spec cannot classify a listing or approve it on Etsy’s behalf.
Keep design evidence: dated sketches, controlled artwork, revisions and correspondence showing the seller’s creative decisions. Keep the production brief and quote describing the supplier’s stage. These records help the seller represent the process consistently and respond if a marketplace asks for information.
Do not say “hand-cut by me” if the outline is CNC routed by a supplier. Equally, a seller who genuinely designs, finishes, assembles and personalises a product can describe those contributions without hiding machine assistance. Accuracy builds more trust than vague artisan language.
Craft blanks need a separate check
A plain shape sold for another maker to decorate may be considered differently from a seller-designed finished product. Etsy’s rules for sourced items and craft supplies must be reviewed for the particular listing. Sanding, adding a sticker or repacking an item does not automatically decide eligibility. Check current definitions and examples rather than relying on forum comments or an old competing listing.
If selling a blank, state the material, supplied condition, dimensions and intended craft use truthfully. Do not imply that tooling marks, edges or surface preparation meet a standard that has not been agreed and inspected.
Example disclosure journey
When a seller creates original geometric wall-art files and asks Wood to Spec to machine the base shapes, the seller may then apply a layered painted composition, assemble hanging hardware, photograph the finished artwork and dispatch customer orders.
The seller saves original design development and names the active vector revision. The production requirement distinguishes base machining from seller-owned colour layout and assembly. Before listing, the seller reads Etsy’s current Creativity Standards, Seller Policy and production-partner help page. If the current interface requires a partner entry, the seller enters a factual description rather than copying marketing text.
A second proposed listing offers the unpainted base shape alone. The seller does not assume that the first listing’s treatment carries over. They separately check whether the item and listing fit the current craft-supply provisions. If uncertainty remains, they seek guidance from Etsy or a suitably qualified adviser before investing in stock.
CNC production hand-off
For an enquiry, provide the rights-cleared design, dimensions, material, quantity, finish hand-off and active revision. Explain whether the part will be sold as received, transformed further or assembled with other components. If personalisation is machined, define who creates and approves each variable file.
The workshop quote establishes only the production scope. It does not grant intellectual-property rights, verify marketplace eligibility, create a product-safety assessment or approve listing claims. The seller owns those decisions.
Disclosure mistakes that undermine marketplace trust
Copying a competitor’s disclosure. Their design history, process, location and account status may differ. Describe your own workflow against current official policy.
Assuming any finishing makes an item seller-made. Classification depends on policy and substance, not a token operation.
Using renderings as if they are product photographs. Buyers should see the real item where policy and accurate representation require it. Label visualisations clearly if used.
Hiding the supplier to preserve a handmade impression. Incomplete disclosure can undermine customer and marketplace trust. Explain contribution honestly.
Sending copyrighted characters or branded logos for machining. A production partner does not clear rights. Use only content you are authorised to reproduce.
Treating marketplace acceptance as product-safety approval. Listing status does not prove legal compliance, durability or suitability for a user group.
