A useful CNC enquiry can begin with a pencil sketch, a photograph with dimensions or a description of the problem. The first goal is not a perfect drawing. It is to make the function, scale, material, quantity and important features clear enough to review.
CNC routing in one paragraph
A CNC router moves a rotating cutter along programmed paths. It is well suited to repeatable outlines and controlled features in suitable sheet materials. The cutter is round, so internal corners, narrow slots and fine details need thought. A CNC machine reproduces defined geometry; it does not decide the design intent by itself.
Five facts that make a first review useful
- Purpose: what the part must do.
- Overall size: approximate length, width and thickness.
- Quantity: one, a prototype, or a possible repeated batch.
- Important details: holes, pockets, joints, text or mating objects.
- Finish and postage: how it should look and how it will reach its user.
If a fact is unknown, write “not decided”. That is more useful than guessing.

- treating a JPG as exact cut geometry;
- dimensioning only the outside and not hole positions;
- assuming nominal material thickness is exact;
- expecting square internal corners from a round cutter;
- forgetting the size of the parcel after protection is added;
- leaving fit, finish or front-face requirements until after cutting.
Starting from measurements and photographs
For a replacement tray insert, outside measurements, photographs of the objects and a sketch of the compartments can be enough to begin a review even when no vector drawing exists. The missing fit dimensions and priorities can then be identified before a quote.
