Turn a product idea into a CNC-made product or blank.

Start with the buyer and function, then test machining, finishing and packing assumptions before committing to repeat stock.

A promising product idea is not yet a production specification. Begin with the buyer’s use, then make deliberate decisions about dimensions, material, finish, safety, packaging and the point where Wood to Spec’s work ends. CNC routing may be an efficient production method, but machine capability should not dictate a product that customers do not need.

Start with the buyer problem

Write one sentence describing who the item is for, what it helps them do and where they will use it. “A wall-mounted display for six medals in a teenager’s bedroom” is more useful than “a personalised wooden sign.” The first version raises practical questions about load, fixings, wall clearance, accessible edges, personalisation space and parcel length.

Separate requirements into three groups:

  • Must work: capacity, fit, strength, mounting, stability or another functional outcome.
  • Must look right: visible faces, edge treatment, grain direction, colour and acceptable natural variation.
  • Can change: non-critical outline details, corner radii, thickness, hidden pockets or assembly method.

This separation gives the production review room to suggest a simpler toolpath without accidentally changing the reason someone buys the product.

Turn the concept into a controlled brief

Provide overall dimensions and units, not only an image. Identify the intended material rather than saying “wood” and state whether alternatives can be considered. Mark every mating part, fixing and bought-in component. If a recess must hold an object, provide the actual object, a reliable technical drawing or measured dimensions with a sensible explanation of variation.

Define the production hand-off. A CNC blank might be cut and profiled ready for you to sand, paint, personalise and pack. A component may also need drilled features, pockets or engraved details. Only work confirmed in the quote belongs to Wood to Spec. Seller fulfilment, retail packaging, final assembly and stockholding are not offered; product testing, listing and compliance also remain the seller’s responsibilities.

Name each file and revision. A practical pattern is MEDAL-DISPLAY-R02 with a dated note describing what changed. Do not send several similarly named attachments and expect a workshop to infer which one is current.

Example decision sequence

For a layered pet-lead holder, the first sketch might show a decorative animal silhouette, three hooks and a separate name plate. Before requesting a batch, the seller needs the hook drawing, an intended maximum load, a fixing plan and a cardboard parcel mock-up.

The detailed ear tips look attractive on screen but create fragile projections in use and postage. The seller chooses a slightly broader silhouette and keeps the recognisable shape. A small material sample is machined to test the hook holes and painted edge appearance. One complete prototype then reveals that the screw heads interfere with the wall, so the recess is changed and the revision advances. Listing photographs, instructions and packaging are produced from the approved physical version—not the earlier rendering.

The lesson is not that every lead holder needs the same design. It is that each prototype should answer named uncertainties before stock multiplies them.

Cost and production hand-off

Work backwards from the full sellable-unit cost. Include design work, samples, CNC supply, your sanding and finishing time, bought-in parts, packaging, packing labour, postage, marketplace fees, expected rework, returns and required margin. A target retail price can guide design choices, but it cannot guarantee a machining price or sales volume. Use the landed-cost guide to keep assumptions visible.

Ask what happens once the parts arrive. Can you finish the expected batch consistently? Do wet finishes need curing racks? Will personalisation create a queue? Is there a defined check before the item enters its box? A design that is economical to cut can still be unprofitable when seller labour is ignored.

Product-development shortcuts that create risk

Designing from a picture without scale. The item looks proportionate online, but hardware and parcel constraints arrive later. Recover by adding overall dimensions and full-size references before toolpath review.

Treating a blank as a completed product. A cleanly machined part does not prove the seller’s finish, assembly, instructions or packaging. Build and test the actual retail version.

Freezing every visual detail too early. Decorative features can add fragile corners, extra tool changes or hand finishing. Mark which characteristics customers truly value and allow manufacturability discussion elsewhere.

Ordering quantity before proving the workflow. A large batch spreads setup cost but also repeats errors and consumes finishing capacity. Move through prototype and test batch with explicit decisions.

Making safety or performance claims from appearance. Machinability is not evidence that a product is safe, load-bearing, child-suitable or compliant. Obtain the relevant specialist advice and evidence.

Product brief checklist

  • Buyer, intended use and use environment are described.
  • Overall size, units and critical functional dimensions are marked.
  • Material, thickness, visible faces and acceptable variation are stated.
  • Hardware, mating objects and supplied drawings are identified.
  • Seller and Wood to Spec responsibilities are separated.
  • Active part IDs and revision names are unambiguous.
  • Prototype questions and pass conditions are written down.
  • Finish, personalisation, assembly and checking labour are considered.
  • Packed-size target and vulnerable features are recorded.
  • Product, marketplace and legal claims have an evidence owner.
  • Quantity scenarios and repeat-order intentions are explained.

Questions before commissioning a first product

Do I need a finished CAD file before enquiring?

No. A dimensioned sketch, photographs and ordinary-language description can start a useful conversation. Any drawing, file repair or development work should be scoped before it becomes chargeable. A technical file does not replace the functional brief.

Should I request one prototype of the whole product?

Use the smallest test that answers the risk. A feature coupon may resolve a recess or finish question cheaply; a full prototype is appropriate when assembly, balance, appearance and packing interact.

Can you tell me what will sell?

Wood to Spec can discuss machinability and a proposed production scope, not guarantee demand or marketplace success. Sellers should test the customer proposition, price and listing with their own evidence.

What should be kept for a repeat order?

Retain the approved file revision, part IDs, material and finish specification, quantity, hardware references, prototype acceptance, packaging revision and written changes. A repeat enquiry should point to this record and confirm whether anything has changed.

Recheck the evidence before design freeze

Workshop capability and quoted scope are confirmed for each enquiry. Material information should come from the current supplier or manufacturer. Marketplace policies, consumer requirements and safety rules can change, so check the relevant official sources at design freeze and again before listing.
