Two parts with the same outside dimensions can require very different work. CNC cost reflects the complete route from understanding the file through setup, safe cutting, checks and dispatch—not the outline size or machine minutes alone.

Cost components

  1. Review and clarification: understanding intent, repairing ambiguity and confirming revisions.
  2. Programming and setup: toolpaths, tools, zero/reference and workholding.
  3. Material: grade, thickness, sheet yield and waste risk.
  4. Machining: path length, depths, passes, detail and removal volume.
  5. Tool changes: stopping, changing, checking and resuming safely.
  6. Part handling: tabs/separation, grouping and agreed inspection.
  7. Production hand-off: any confirmed edge/finish work, protection, packaging and postage.

Why tool count matters

Adding fine engraving to a profile-cut part may require another cutter, setup and verification. The extra tool can improve the result, but it should earn its place. Read the machining-time and cost guide.

Sensible simplifications

Clarify the part’s function, use one controlled revision, remove decorative detail that does not help the buyer, standardise material and thickness, group compatible operations, design quantities for sensible nesting, and test only the uncertain feature first. Reduce time without ruining the part.

Compare changes against total work

Removing one short toolpath may have little effect if review, setup and packaging remain the same. Conversely, standardising a pocket depth or eliminating a separate engraving cutter can remove a complete operation group. Ask for options that state what changes in function, appearance and responsibility, then compare the whole scope. For seller products, add your own finishing and fulfilment time: a cheaper raw blank can produce a more expensive completed item when it needs difficult edge preparation or sorting.

What a quote needs

Geometry or clear sketch, quantities, material, depths, critical fits, finish responsibility, approval route, required grouping and packed-size/postage considerations. A target budget can guide options but does not create a promised price.

Why two same-size parts cost differently

Two parts can share the same outside dimensions while one uses a single profile and the other adds several depths, fine text and fitted hardware. The second part requires more programming, toolpath changes, machining and checking, so outside size alone cannot predict its price.

Identify the work in the complete route

Cost assumptions that weaken a comparison

The customer asks for a per-square-metre price.

Explain the complete operation route and request controlled geometry and quantities.

Batch unit cost is assumed to fall indefinitely.

Recognise continuing material, machine, handling, inspection and fulfilment work.

Why not publish an instant price list?

Geometry, setup, material, tools, quantity and dispatch scope differ enough that a generic figure could mislead.

When is another tool worth its cost?

When it protects a required function or appearance that a simpler route cannot achieve acceptably.

Can a prototype reduce total risk?

Yes when it prevents an unresolved feature from being multiplied across material and seller labour.

The quotation confirms the current material, quantity, programming and machining scope, checks, hand-off, protection and dispatch. Production timing is stated in the quotation rather than inferred from the initial enquiry response target.
