MDF, moisture-resistant MDF and structural plywood are the standard materials for the Wood to Spec service. They are not interchangeable labels for “wood sheet”. Each has a different surface, edge construction, response to moisture and finishing route.
Choose the material by working backwards from the part’s use, appearance, assembly and environment. Then qualify the exact product and thickness during project review.

This table supports an early discussion; it is not a specification. Exact grade, product data, nominal thickness, stock source, part size and intended finish still matter.
MDF
Medium-density fibreboard has a relatively uniform composition and a face that can suit painted products. Routed edges expose fibres differently from the factory faces, so the finishing plan should distinguish them. Deep pockets and small details also create more exposed edge area that may need preparation.
Questions to answer include:
- Will the part remain indoors in a dry environment?
- Are faces, edges or both visible?
- Will the customer or seller seal, prime or paint it?
- Does the product include joints controlled by actual sheet thickness?
- Can the final weight and handling route accept the chosen thickness?
MDF should not be described as waterproof or suitable for an environment merely because it machines cleanly. Material suitability and finish protection remain project decisions.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MR MDF is intended to offer improved moisture resistance compared with standard MDF, subject to its product specification and correct use. “Moisture resistant” does not mean waterproof, exterior rated or appropriate for continuous wetting.
Use the exact manufacturer or supplier product information when exposure matters. State the intended environment in the brief: occasional humidity in an interior space is different from direct water contact or outdoor use. Edge sealing, coating and assembly details can remain important even when MR MDF is selected.
Keep MR MDF clearly identified through quotation, production and repeat orders. A colour tint sometimes associated with a board is not a complete material specification.
Structural plywood
Structural plywood is manufactured to a structural specification, but that description does not certify the finished product or joint. Product design, loading, fixing details, edge distances and the real service environment still require suitable assessment.
Plywood introduces visible plies and grain direction. Face appearance can differ between sides and sheets. Routed edges may reveal voids or changes in the internal layers. A clean digital path cannot remove natural or manufacturing variation already present in the board.
Specify:
- exact grade or product where required;
- which face remains visible;
- whether grain direction is mandatory, preferred or unrestricted;
- whether layered edges are acceptable or will be covered;
- the finish and expected exposure;
- any appearance selection needed across a matched set.
Mandatory face and grain rules can reduce nesting freedom and affect material use. Treat them as quotation inputs rather than assumptions added after a layout exists.
Nominal thickness is not a fit dimension
A sheet sold as 12 mm or 18 mm may not measure exactly that value at every point. Product tolerance, moisture, storage, sanding, face layers and construction can affect actual thickness. Plywood and MDF also vary in different ways.
This matters where thickness controls geometry:
- a tab entering a slot;
- a shelf in a dado or housing;
- a rebate intended to sit flush;
- hardware passing through the sheet;
- stacked or laminated layers;
- a fitted lid or removable divider.
It matters less for a decorative outside profile with no mating relationship. Do not add unnecessary thickness controls where they do not protect function.
Choose the evidence basis for a fit
For a thickness-controlled feature, use one of four deliberate approaches:
- Nominal basis: acceptable when the relationship is not critical and variation is understood.
- Measured material: critical geometry is reviewed against representative readings from the intended sheet or batch.
- Test coupon: several labelled candidate fits are cut in representative stock and the required behaviour is selected.
- Adjustable assembly: hardware or joint design provides suitable adjustment so normal variation is not the controlling risk.
Measure representative material with a suitable tool at several useful points. Record material identity, nominal description and the condition measured. Avoid damaged or compressed edges. A few readings describe only the sampled material; they do not create a universal allowance for every future sheet.
Finish belongs in the material decision
Paint, primer, lacquer, veneer, edge treatments and adhesive can affect appearance and fit. MDF edges may need a different preparation route from faces. Plywood edges may remain deliberately visible or require covering. Fine engraving can lose clarity under a heavy coating.
If parts are finished before assembly, test the completed finish stack where fit matters. If finishing follows assembly, confirm access to internal corners and how glue squeeze-out will be managed. Avoid hiding an assumed coating allowance inside CAD without a representative test.

Other sheet materials
MDF, MR MDF and structural plywood are the standard materials. Other sheet materials may be considered for suitable projects but are not part of the standard offering. Do not assume acceptance simply because a material can be cut by some CNC routers.
If proposing another material, provide the exact product, technical information, thickness, intended operation and reason for using it. Its suitability must be confirmed before quotation. No hardwood, softwood, plastic, metal or composite capability is implied by this guide.
Material supply and stock size
The quotation will state whether material is supplied by Wood to Spec or by the customer. Customer-supplied material should not be delivered or purchased on an assumption; condition, quantity and handling need prior agreement.
The standard maximum stock size is 1220 × 1220 mm. This is not automatically the maximum finished-part size. Workholding, cutter access, edge allowance and the machining method can reduce the usable part area. Final suitability is confirmed during review.
Example: a painted slot assembly
For a painted MDF organiser, drawing both the shelf and slot at the nominal sheet thickness does not define a usable joint. The actual sheet, slot machining result, primer and paint all contribute.
A controlled route is to measure the intended stock, describe the desired hand fit, cut labelled candidate slots, apply the real finish and approve the resulting behaviour. The chosen geometry is then tied to the material and revision tested. A later material or finish change becomes a reason to review the fit again.
Material information for an enquiry
Include:
- intended use and environment;
- preferred material family and nominal thickness;
- exact product or supplier reference where required;
- overall stock and finished-part size;
- visible face and grain rules;
- edge appearance and finishing plan;
- every feature controlled by actual thickness;
- representative measurements or a proposed coupon;
- whether customer-supplied material is being proposed.
Material choice does not establish structural capacity, food-contact suitability, fire behaviour or another regulated outcome. Those questions need evidence appropriate to the finished product, separate from the machining review.
