Package testing should answer named questions before customer orders become the experiment. A documented workshop sequence can reveal obvious movement, abrasion, weak corners and closure problems. It cannot reproduce every distribution hazard or justify a certified-performance claim, so match the test route to the product’s value, fragility and consequence of failure.
Define the evidence you need
Start with a failure-mode list. What could happen to the surface, corners, panel, joints, fine details, hardware or outer pack? Write an inspection criterion for each. “No damage” is less useful than “no visible rub mark on the painted face under the agreed viewing conditions” or “all four corner protectors remain located.”
Choose a representative product and record its part revision, material, finish and cure. Record the package revision, component suppliers and packing instruction. Photograph the item and pack before testing. This makes later comparisons possible.
A proportionate non-certified sequence
Initial inspection and measurement
Check product appearance, assembly and function. Close the parcel using the normal method, then measure external maxima and total dispatch weight. Note ambient or cure conditions if they could affect the finish.
Movement check
Lift and gently change orientation in a controlled way. Listen and feel for contents moving. Do not use uncontrolled force. If movement is detected, open the pack and identify the contact route rather than simply adding random fill.
Handling exercise
Create a written sequence appropriate to the item, workspace and safety limits. It may include repeated placement on faces or a defined low-height handling/drop exercise. Establish safe boundaries, clear the area and never test in a way that risks people or equipment. Specialist standards and laboratories are appropriate where formal evidence is required.
Compression observation
For products that may be stacked, a controlled static load can reveal box deformation or finish marking. Use a safe, documented setup and stay inside competent limits. Do not extrapolate an informal check into a warehouse stacking rating.
Open and inspect
Photograph the outer pack before opening. Inspect the same product zones and functional checks used at baseline. Record pass, failure or inconclusive—not just impressions. Keep damaged samples where useful for diagnosis.
Change one thing deliberately
When a test exposes a weakness, identify likely cause and select a controlled change. Adding a stiffener, moving hardware or adjusting a corner pad may help different risks. Issue a new package revision and repeat enough of the sequence to support the change. Several simultaneous undocumented changes make the learning hard to interpret.
Re-measure external size and weight after every meaningful pack modification. Improved protection can move the parcel into another carrier service or weight step, so cost and listing assumptions also need review from current official sources.
Example test and learning loop
For engraved plywood table markers, stacking the parts with tissue inside a mailer may still allow movement. A controlled movement check can reveal a rattle even when no damage is immediately visible.
After a documented handling sequence, inspection shows tiny edge marks where the stack moved against the outer wall. The seller trials a perimeter restraint and divides the stack into two captured groups. A repeat eliminates the observed movement, but the extra insert changes package depth. The parcel is measured again and the current carrier option is reviewed.
A small number of test-batch shipments then use package revision PK02. The seller logs service, destination region, delivery outcome and any buyer photograph without making claims from too little data. One wet outer pack arrives with the product intact, while another shows a closure weakness. The closure is reviewed separately. The lesson is a traceable learning loop, not a promise that PK02 will survive every route.
Learn from damage and returns
Create a consistent incident record:
- order and dispatch date without exposing unnecessary personal data;
- product and package revisions;
- carrier, service and purchasing channel;
- reported condition of the outer pack;
- clear customer photographs where permission and privacy allow;
- location and type of product damage;
- whether pieces were missing or had moved;
- refund, replacement, repair and postage cost;
- probable cause, confidence and next review action.
Look for patterns across enough comparable cases. Do not blame a carrier, customer or material without evidence. Some returns are product-expectation or assembly issues, not transit damage, and may need listing or instruction changes.
CNC production implications
Package failures can reveal product geometry worth reviewing: a vulnerable projection, weak bridge, loose-fit assembly or inconsistent nesting relationship. Send photographs and the active design revision when asking whether a change is machinable. Keep the customer need visible; thickening every feature can alter appearance, material use or assembly.
Wood to Spec’s scope remains the confirmed CNC work. Seller finishing, packaging tests, carrier choice, customer claims and formal certification are separate unless specifically contracted.
Testing problems to prevent
No baseline photographs exist. Pre-existing marks can be mistaken for test damage.
The test uses raw material. Finished surfaces and assembled components may fail differently.
A dramatic drop is improvised. Unsafe, unrepeatable testing gives poor evidence. Use a defined, proportionate route or a specialist.
Several pack layers change at once. The seller cannot identify which change helped or created another issue.
One pass becomes a guarantee. State the tested conditions and limits.
Damage reports are kept only in messages. Structured revision-linked data is needed to see trends.

Should I post a test parcel to myself?
It may provide route-specific learning, but one successful journey does not prove wider performance. Preserve the service, conditions and result as limited evidence.
Can I advertise the pack as drop-tested?
Avoid broad performance claims from informal checks. Formal statements need defined standards, competent methods and evidence covering the exact product and package.
When should I retest?
After material, finish, geometry, supplier, protection, closure, bundle or service changes, and when real damage evidence challenges prior assumptions.
Match the test programme to current risk
Carrier networks and acceptance terms change, while packaging supplies can be substituted or revised. Verify current service rules and material data.
